Damage estimate in Sherwood Park explosions pegged at 14 million
Damage from a pair of explosions in Sherwood Park, Alta has been estimated at $14 million.Council said that money will come from unbudgeted expenditures and that the incident was uninsurable.Strathcona County policy is to seek council approval for any expenditures over $2 million.The 14 million is only an estimate at this point, as environmental assessments are still being performed and the final cost won’t be known until restoration work is complete.“We thank everyone for their patience. This is a large incident with many moving pieces, and we are grateful for the high level of professionalism demonstrated by recovery experts and staff,” Mayor Rod Frank said in a news release. “We continue to move forward as swiftly, and safely, as possible to return to normal business.”County Hall is open but the community centre, which includes the library and is situated over the parkade, is still closed and is expected to stay that way for the next 90 days.Council offices are now temporarily located in County Hall in the space where Economic Development and Tourism operates.As for the incident itself, the RCMP continues to look into the motive behind the explosions.READ MORE: Man dead after two explosions in Sherwood ParkEmergency crews were called to reports of a fire on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at a complex that houses the Strathcona County office and council chambers in Sherwood Park.The first call came in at 6:15 p.m. and when emergency crews arrived, they found a man inside a vehicle where the explosion was reported. He was transported to hospital, but died a short time later.At around 8:15 p.m. that same day, while members from the Emergency Response Team (ERT) along with the Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) were on scene investigating, a second explosion occurred while they were in close proximity.Mounties say an autopsy was performed on 21-year-old Kane Kosolowsky and that he died of a gunshot wound after a pair of explosions in Sherwood Park.READ MORE: 21-year-old suspect in Sherwood Park double explosions identifiedInvestigators earlier released that the man had been injured and sent to hospital and that it was not related to an interaction with police.Kosolowsky was the only person found at the scene of two blasts at a complex that also houses a library and a restaurant.
