2019 Indoor Track & Field Championships Begin Sunday at Birmingham CrossPlex

first_imgBIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – 2019 marks the sixth-straight year the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will be at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Events will kick off Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT, wrapping up Monday afternoon at 2:40 p.m.Sam Houston State aims to capture their fourth consecutive indoor championships on both the men’s and women’s sides. In 2018, the Bearkats men captured a first-place team-performance in which they racked up 128 points, while the Sam Houston State women cruised to the title with 123 points and a 28-point margin of victory. All told in 2018, there were seven SHSU gold medalists on the men’s side and three first-place individuals on the Bearkat women’s side.The 2018 men’s Southland Indoor Athlete of the Year, Tyler Adams, returns for his final season in a Sam Houston State uniform. In 2018, Adams captured the Outstanding Field Events and Most Valuable Performer awards to go along with individual championships in the high jump, long jump and heptathlon events. Lamar senior Thai Williams enters the weekend as the reigning women’s Athlete of the Year for each of the previous two indoor seasons. Williams concluded last year’s indoor championships with first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash and long jump.Sunday’s events begin with the women’s 60-meter hurdles portion of the multis at 8:30 a.m. Following shortly after is the men’s multis 60-meter dash at 8:50 a.m. The remaining Sunday morning multi events will run on a rolling schedule. Day one field events open at 1 p.m. Sunday with the women’s weight throw finals and conclude with the women’s long jump finals at 5 p.m. Men’s opening day field competition commences at 2:30 p.m. with the long jump finals ocurring simultaneously with the weight throw and the pole vault at 4 p.m.Day two action will commence Monday with the men’s 60m hurdles multis-events at 9 a.m. before the conclusion of meet competition with the men’s 4x400m relays at 2:40 p.m.All awards will be presented at the conclusion of each event’s final.The 2019 Southland Indoor Track & Field Championships will be streamed on the Southland Digital Network.
